I really enjoyed reading Embers of Shadow, Flame of Light. Once I started it, I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going on. The mystery kept pulling me in, and there were a lot of moments that made me curious about what would happen next.
Janel’s return home brings up old memories, secrets, and things that don’t quite make sense at first. I liked how the story didn’t rush everything. It slowly revealed pieces of the mystery and kept building suspense along the way. The creepy atmosphere, strange events, and hidden truths made it a fun read.
I also had the chance to help edit this book, and I honestly enjoyed that part too. It was nice being able to help make the pages look good and see everything come together. Watching the story take shape through the editing process made me appreciate it even more.
If you like paranormal mysteries with a spooky small-town feel, secrets, and plenty of questions that keep you turning the pages, I think you’ll enjoy this one. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next book and seeing where the story goes from here.
Embers of Shadow, Flame of Light by Courtney Valenzuela is the kind of book that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. I loved it. The worldbuilding feels lush and lived‑in, with shadows and fire twined through every scene, and Valenzuela balances high-stakes magic with intimate, character-driven moments. The pacing is spot on chapters fly by but there’s still room for quiet beats that make the emotional payoffs land.
What stood out most to me were the characters. They’re layered, flawed, and easy to root for, especially as their loyalties are tested and their backstories slowly unfold. The tension between duty and desire is beautifully handled, and the relationships (romantic and otherwise) have real chemistry and consequence. The prose is vivid without being overwrought, and the action sequences are cinematic yet clear.
By the end, I felt satisfied and still hungry for more of this world. If you’re into fantasy that blends darkness and hope, sharp magic systems, and characters who burn bright even when everything around them is falling apart, this must read. I can’t wait to see what Valenzuela writes next.
I read Embers of Shadow, Flame of Light and really enjoyed it from start to finish. From the very beginning, it draws you into the eerie little town of Hollow Creek and holds your attention with its mystery and atmosphere.
Janel’s return home sets everything in motion, bringing old secrets and unanswered questions back to the surface. I liked how the story slowly unfolds instead of rushing each chapter adds a little more tension and keeps you curious about what’s really going on.
The setting is very well described, almost like you can feel the weight of the town itself and the things people are trying to hide. The mix of mystery with fantasy and adventure made it an engaging and easy book to stay invested in.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable read, especially if you like stories that build suspense, have meaningful characters, and keep you guessing until things start to come together.
Embers of Shadow completely hooked me. Courtney Valenzuela delivers an incredibly eerie atmosphere, high stakes, and a gripping clash between light and dark. A fast-paced, unputdownable mystery. Highly recommend!
